Pet Euthanasia

Caring and Compassionate Pet Euthanasia

Older cat on blanket

Our veterinarian near Abbotsford offers in office or at home euthanasia options for your dog and cat.

Euthanasia is something most people would rather not think about, unfortunately, pets become old and ill, and when they appear to be suffering, sometimes pet euthanasia is the most caring and compassionate thing a pet owner can do for their pet.

Understanding When It's Time to Say Goodbye

It can be difficult for pet owners to determine when it’s time to say goodbye to their beloved pets, especially if your pet has good days and bad days.

If you are unsure as to whether it’s time to say goodbye, South Fraser Animal Hospital can evaluate your dog's and cat’s health and answer your questions in order to help you make a decision.

Below are a few reasons that may indicate that your dog and cat is ready to pass over rainbow bridge:

  1. Your dog and cat is in chronic pain that cannot be alleviated with medication
  2. Your dog and cat has stopped eating and/or lost weight
  3. Your dog and cat has chronic vomiting and diarrhea that cannot be controlled
  4. Your dog's and cat’s activity levels have dropped
  5. Your dog and cat can no longer stand or walk on his or her own

In-Office Euthanasia

Many pet owners choose in-office pet euthanasia. However, they still want their pets to be comfortable for the journey and to help reduce pet anxiety, and South Fraser Animal Hospital can help you make your dog's and cat’s final car ride more comfortable by providing you with a sedative that you can give to your pet prior to arriving at our veterinary office.

Once you arrive in our office, you will have the option of choosing how involved you wish to be in your pet’s final moments. If you wish to stay with your beloved dog and cat throughout their final moments, our team will escort you to a private room where you can say your goodbyes and hold your pet while he or she passes.

During the procedure, your veterinarian will give your pet a sedative to put them to sleep then inject the medications that help your pet pass peacefully. Once your dog and cat has passed, you will have the option to take them back home for burial, or we can help you send your pet to a place where he or she can be cremated and you can retrieve the ash at a later date.

At-Home Pet Euthanasia

An increasing number of pet owners are choosing at-home pet euthanasia in order to help their pets as comfortable as possible and in a familiar environment. The process for at-home pet euthanasia is essentially the same as at an office.

The only difference is that our veterinarian brings the medications to your home to be administered. Being at home also gives you the option of having your dog and cat put to sleep either indoors or outdoors, depending on which you think your pet would prefer.

Once the medication has been administered and your dog and cat has passed peacefully, you will be given time to grieve. When you and your family members are ready, your veterinarian can remove your dog and cat from your home, or we can help you find a place to have them cremated in Abbotsford.
